Renew Newcastle on ABC Sunday Arts this weekend

July 3rd, 2009 TIM NEVE

Renew Newcastle will be featured on ABC1’s Sunday Arts this weekend - tune in! Sunday July 5 2009 5-6pm

Sunday Arts says:

What becomes of a once-mighty centre of industry when the businesses fail or move away, and the jobs evaporate?

In this era of industrial decline, it is a question being asked of many places around the world. In the former steel town of Newcastle, there were over a hundred vacant shops and offices on the main shopping strip. But, six months ago television presenter and writer, Marcus Westbury set about changing the atmosphere in Newcastle’s city centre by inviting artists and designers to inhabit the empty buildings.

By having artists occupy these spaces he hoped to prevent the city turning into a ghost town and falling prey to crime. The Renew Newcastle project has been an incredible success in a short amount of time: there are already 27 different artist groups occupying the empty spaces in the city. Even Marcus is surprised by how quickly his plan to rejuvenate the city has been taken up, both to assist the business community in the area while and simultaneously give a boost to local artists and designers. Fenella Kernebone went along for a look.

Creative Catalysts

May 21st, 2009 Heath Killen

A big congratulations to Zac and Zolton Zavos (the brains behind Lost At E Minor) for making the list of the top 100 most influential creative producers in Sydney.

The list was compiled by Renew Newcastle founder Marcus Westbury for the Creative Sydney festival which runs from May - June this year.

Zac and Zolton are in pretty impressive company, with the likes of Steve Pavlovic, George Miller, John Polson, The Presets, Animal Logic and Vince Frost also appearing on the list. Check out the whole 100 at the Creative Sydney site, and be sure to get down there over the next month and check out some of the many fine events.

PRESCRIBING GOOD TIMES

May 16th, 2009 TIM NEVE

‘The Clinic’ officially opened its doors at our Launch Party last night.

Invited guests were amongst the first to experience the collaborative space - as our invite stated everyone would be ‘prescribed refreshments and good times.’ And so they did.

The vibrant space glowed in The Clinic’s trademark fluorescent green hue as guests enjoyed Lovell’s Lager (who kindly sponsored the event), delicacies from Sushi Koo and indulged in themed novelty treats - such as the very popular vodka jello-shots served in medicine cups and syringes. Stu mixed an ambient soundtrack of Berlin Beats.

Quite a night!

It’s official

May 14th, 2009 Heath Killen

Even though we’ve all been operating our respective businesses out of 66 King Street for a couple of months now, tomorrow is the Clinic Launch party, which means that we’re officially open for business!

Big thanks to GPT, Marcus, Marni and the Renew Newcastle crew for making it all possible.

Lovells Lager

May 13th, 2009 Heath Killen

It’s The Clinic launch party this Friday, and Lovells Lager have generously offered to supply our libations for the evening.

The Lovells brewery is run by ARIA award winning producer Matt Lovell, who has worked with some of Australia’s top bands, including Something For Kate, The Presets and INXS.

Lovells Lager is a finely crafted beer that mixes the traditional skills of master brewing and master drinking with the best quality malt, hops and yeast culture. A refreshingly crisp and clean straw colour, a defined malt aroma, a hint of spicy Saaz hops and a well formed head make this a full flavoured, 100% authentic pure lager with no additives and no preservatives.

Great stuff!

Well ‘The Clinitians’ are settling in nicely.

Our former optometrist clinic, with its maze of ‘patient’ rooms have been divided into separate studios with each being given a new lease of life by their occupants.

Next time you pass by peek in our window to see our space transforming - decked out in a medical-meets-industrial kinda style… a flurorescent light box glows at night to announce our arrival to the world!
